Surprisingly, the most available work snack was revealed as biscuits (73%), but the most likely work snack eaten by surveyed office workers was fruit (54%).

There are compelling reasons why fruit should be eaten at work. And it’s not just about health. Take a look at these top seven reasons why fruit can make a real difference not just to your staff’s health, but to your business’ health, too.

1. Fruit stimulates the memory. Although the way it works is as yet unclear, much research is being undertaken to find out just why fruit is the ultimate brain fuel. What we do know for a fact is that if you consume fruit effectively, your brain can recall information faster and more easily.

2. Fruit improves staff morale and wellbeing. Research confirms that company morale is stronger in organisations that provide health and wellbeing support.

3. Fruit makes you feel better. It’s a proven fact that people who are frequently depressed lift out of their depression slowly but surely after consuming substantial amounts of fresh fruit on a regular basis. To get the best out of fruit’s nutritional benefits, eat it on an empty stomach around 20 mins before your other meals. This way, the fruit won’t ferment in your tummy and all the health-promoting benefits can be effectively absorbed by the blood.

4. Fruit is 100 per cent bad cholesterol free. With so many unhealthy choices around, it’s good to know you can always pick up a piece of fresh fruit and simply know it’s packed with goodness.

5. Fruit helps hydrate your body. 80 per cent of our body is water and the same goes for most fruits too. There’s no other food on the planet that contains this much water, making them the logical choice to help keep your body fresh and hydrated.

6. Fruit helps prevent obesity and high blood pressure. There’s no doubt about it – research has found that sitting is like the new smoking, so we need as much help as possible in the workplace to stay fighting fit. Packed with natural, healthy fibre, fruit is a renowned preventative in helping to fight off factors that cause heart disease.

7. Healthy eating habits increase workplace productivity. Fruit at work helps promote healthier eating habits, which in turn offer numerous benefits for a company including important cost benefits. This is due to a number of reasons including:

• A decrease in absenteeism.

• A decrease in staff recruitment and training costs due to reduced staff turnover.

• Improvement of staff performance through good health and morale.

• A reduction in the number of worker’s compensation claims.

• An enhanced company image and elevation to ‘employer of choice’ status thanks to a promoted workplace wellness program.

• Increased employee loyalty and commitment.

As Ambassadors of Healthy Eating at Work, Fruit at Work conducts a regular Workplace Health Index to understand the state of the nation when it comes to healthy habits in our Australian businesses. While we know there will always be ‘snack envy’ amongst staff when someone pulls out the doughnut, there’s no substitute for the beautiful benefits fruit at work brings.
