Six tips to achieve a better work-life balance for women

quote-never-get-so-busy SIX TIPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE FOR WOMENIn just a few days, we’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day. And goodness haven’t times changed in just a few decades. Today’s modern woman makes up almost half the workforce, with many achieving the highest leadership positions. Women are expected to work harder and smarter than ever before, and in many cases nowadays, juggle raising a family and caring for ageing parents and ailing family members.

Oscar Wilde once said “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” We’re told by many women in the offices we visit that they’re on autopilot. They don’t like it when their friends say, “I don’t know how you do it,” as that makes them feel overwhelmed, yet at the same time, they feel a sense of achievement in dealing with it all. However, they are existing and not living. LinkedIn executed a global study among women in the workplace and discovered 63 percent of those surveyed believed success at work means finding the right balance between work and personal life. So, with women in focus this month, we’ve got some top tips to help you get started on achieving a better work-life balance.

Tip Number 1

Welcome each day with time for you

Even if it means getting out of bed just half an hour earlier. This time belongs to you and you alone. Use it to go for a morning walk/run, or to meditate. Pop on a face and eye mask, make a cup of tea and take yourself back to bed for 30 minutes. It just feels good to do something for yourself while a fresh day awakens.

Tip Number 2

Understand exactly what your personal ‘work-life balance’ means

Many women talk about a ‘work-life balance’ yet it remains undefined in their mind. To execute the perfect work-life balance, you need to truly grasp what the ‘life’ aspect means to you, and also what work aspirations you have. This involves planning with goals in mind. If you’re currently employed, do your research and if you’re after flexible work arrangements, go to your employer with proposals and solutions. If you have a partner, talk to them about what you want to achieve both now and in the future. It may not happen overnight, and you may need to change career paths, but it’s all a journey and enjoy it!

Tip Number 3

Tomorrow is OK!

Everywhere you turn help is at hand, and there’s nothing like outsourcing to make your life easier. At home, run the rule that if you cook – you don’t wash up. Order your groceries online and get them delivered. If you have kids, teach them to iron their shirts as soon as they can. Make a list of your chores and spread the load. Most importantly, if it’s not done today – tomorrow is fine!

Tip Number 4

Learn from others

Many women are able to successfully balance their work with their personal life. Find a mentor whom you can use as a sounding board. When you crack the secrets to a work-life balance yourself, help someone else in need too.

Tip Number 5

Learn when to say no… and yes!

You’ve all heard the saying that if you want something done – ask a busy woman. But there’s something to be said for the power of ‘no’.  By adding something else onto your plate, you will have to compromise something else in return. So learn to say ‘no’ with grace and without guilt if necessary. However, there are other times when it’s good to say ‘yes’ and these involve the lighter side of life. Whether it’s going to a movie if you feel a little tired, doing a charity walk with friends, or simply meeting up with loved ones for a coffee. It’s easy to say no if you’re busy, but these kinds of social interactions are wonderful interrupters to routine and a healthy way for you to stay connected with a balanced lifestyle.

Tip Number 6

Stay healthy, happy and positive

Never forget that you are number one. And that means looking after your body and your mind in every respect. Eat balanced meals with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, drink water, keep your body moving and exercise your mind. With a positive and happy outlook, you can achieve everything and inspire everyone around you.
