Can Certain Foods Make You Smarter?

You’ve heard the saying that food is fuel for the body. Well, what about the brain? It needs fuel just like anything else, and the right type of fuel may actually help in the function of the brain. Try some of these foods for a bit of a brain boost:

Complex Carbohydrates

In recent years carbohydrates have become the enemy for people who are dieting. But what they may not understand is that there are different types of carbs and some of them are absolutely necessary for our health. For example, glucose comes from complex carbohydrates and is used by the brain to help with learning, concentration and memory. Include wholegrains, fruits and vegetables in your diet to get these good carbs.

Another thing that has become the enemy of many people trying to diet is fat. But there is such a thing as ‘good fat’, especially if eaten in moderation. Essential fatty acids are important in brain function and in the performance of the nervous system. You can get fatty acids from walnuts, which can be eaten on their own as a snack or added to your salad at lunch or dinner.

Oily Fish

Another great food to gain your essential fatty acids from is oily fish such as tuna, salmon and trout. Learning ability and mental development requires lots of the fatty acid DHA, which is found in oily fish. Another fatty acid in this food is EPA, which can prevent blood clotting. This in turn can help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
