Latest facts on Mandarins
By June citrus fruit quality and flavour is at its best. The onset of cooler nights and warm sunny days ensure good sugar levels and uniform skin colour. We are currently using a mix of four varieties of Mandarins - Imperials, Taylor Lee, Empress and Afourer.
Imperials are the most popular madarin variety because they are the first to be harvested each season. They are a golden-orange mandarin, and one of a handful of popular citrus varieties that have originated in Australia. The variety was first recognised in Sydney in 1890. Imperials are easy to peel, have very few seeds, and can be enjoyed as a perfect portable snack.
The Taylor-Lee mandarin is another Australian bred variety. It is large in size and has relatively few seeds compared to other varieties. Taylor Lee's are extremely juicy!
This new variety of Mandarins are similar to a Honey Murcott but highly coloured. These fruit have a moderate amount of seeds and are not easy peel, but have a low acid content and are juicy and very sweet.
The Afourer variety originates from Morocco. It develops a highly attractive deep orange-red colour and is easy to peel. It is known to be very flavoursome. It can be seedless, but this can be affected by growing conditions. Afourer are a juicy variety. Consider adding it to your juices through winter.
These mandarins are ripe and ready to eat. They should be refrigerated and will remain in good eating condition for a week to 10 days at room temperature.
