• Workstation workout

If you sit at a desk all day, chances are you are not getting as much exercise as you should.  Today’s fast paced environment coupled with the fact that we are all working more hours often means regular exercise drops to the bottom of our priorities.  If this sounds like you, take heart, there are some simple movements that you can do in your office that may improve your fitness and wellbeing.  It’s unlikely they will transform you into an elite athlete but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Any amount of exercise is beneficial and will counter the effects of sitting all day which can lead to headaches, back pain and lethargy.  Stretching, muscle strengthening and short bursts of aerobic exercises are achievable right at your workstation.

Some easy exercises to get you started include:

    • beginning with head/neck rolls and shoulder shrugs to release any tension
    • while still seated in your chair pump both arms above your head and rapidly tap your toes, repeat 3 to 5 times for 30 seconds each
    • place your feet flat on the floor and raise your heels, try for 20 repetitions and repeat 3 times
    • run on the spot for 60 seconds (beginners should march in place)
    • while standing, reach arms behind you and interlace fingers, pulling back to release the chest and shoulders
    • finish with some deep breathing

This isn’t necessarily the path to the Olympics but these exercises may help you relieve some stress, make you feel better and re-energize you to help you get through the day.  Don’t forget too, that eating plenty of fresh fruit and drinking plenty of water can help you to maximise energy through the day, stay hydrated, and arrive home with energy left for yourself and your family.
