• How to Create an Intellectually Engaging Office Environment

From boardroom executives to entry-level clerical staff, we’ve all experienced the unpleasant sensation of being bored at work. Although this situation may appear to be rather benign, experts on workplace dynamics have suggested that boredom at work can be the trigger that leads to a cascading downward spiral of other adverse outcomes, including job dissatisfaction, loss of productivity, and turnover and attrition.

Looking to stave off boredom in your office environment? Use these tips to create a workplace that will stimulate rather than stultify your employees’ grey matter.

    • Encourage creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. When employees come up with off-the-wall ideas and solutions, praise them for their ingenuity, even if you don’t end up implementing their suggestion.
    • Create a stimulating environment. Bright colours, interesting décor, energetic background music – all of these factors can help perk up tired or disengaged staff members.
    • Inject more ‘play’ into work.  Jettison some of your standard routines and allot more time to brainstorming, strategy sessions, and long-term planning.
    • Vary assignments. Assign individual work and group projects to each employee to keep things lively.
    • Use visualizations whenever possible. Research has shown that the visual ‘pop’ of charts and graphs increase brain activity in ways that written words typically can’t.

Every employee is bound to give into boredom at the office from time to time, but by making an effort to keep things lively and interesting, you can prevent office boredom from becoming an ongoing problem.
